Comments on Mortars data


MORTARS are jointing materials for laying refractory bricks. The trowelling consistency of mortars is achieved using

  • water for some type of mortars, where setting agent is premixed with powdery material or

  • with liquid binder for some other type of mortars where setting agent is added in liquid binder

The properties of the mortar shown under typical value column are mean values from quality control figures and the properties under specification column are guaranteed values of the product.


Nature of Bond: The bond may be ceramic, phosphate or chemical in nature. Where several bonds are used together, the bond is designated according to the nature of the bond which plays the principal part during hardening.


Raw Material Base: This is the essential raw material conferring particular properties to the mixture.


Maximum Service Temperature: The temperature is based on the product being heated on one face only in a clean -atmosphere. Heating on more than one face, mechanical loaci or the presence of corrosive dust, certain gases or slags will cause the maximum service, temperature to alter.


Sintering Temperature: This is an indicative temperature at which the mortar will start sintering and form a monolithic mass with the brick lining.


Chemical Analysis: Carried out according to IS 1527 - 1972,


Water/Binder For Trowelling Consistency: This is the percentage of potable water / liquid binder required for developing trowelling consistency under laboratory conditions at 27°C and the value is reported in °,/o.


Water for Ramming Consistency: This is the percentage of potable water required for developing rat-nn-ling consistency under laboratory conditions at 27 00 and the value is reported in %„


Transverse Strength: Determined as per IS 10047 - 1981.


Cold Crushing Strength: Determined as per IS 11452 — 1985,


Screen Analysis: Determined according to IS 1528 (PART 14) - 1974.


Refractoriness: The cones are prepared as per procedure mentioned in IS 10570 -1983. The test is done as per IS 1528 (PART 1) 1980.

Storage Life: The period indicated begins with the date of production and is based on the storage under cool, dry, frost-free conditions. If the period is exceeded, the material does not necessarily become unworkable. Yet in this case, it is recommended that the material is tested prior to installation. Other than the above storage conditions may affect the storage life of the material.
